Trail Ahead Therapy was created to welcome, celebrate, and affirm people of all backgrounds, beliefs, identities, and sizes. As a trauma-informed, queer-owned practice, we recognize that healing and growth can only flourish in an environment rooted in safety, authenticity, and compassion, so we’re committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for all.

Trail Ahead Therapy is a trauma-informed metal health therapy practice that supports adults, teens (ages 14 and older), couples, and families through in-person therapy in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico and online telehealth services. As a trauma-informed practice, we’ve designed every aspect of our offices and psychotherapy practices to create a safe, inclusive, healing space where our highly trained therapists can offer personalized tools and skills to help you thrive.

We support holistic wellbeing, between body & mind.

We believe in destigmatizing mental health. We don’t see “disorders,” we see people with the potential to heal from trauma, chronic stress, attachment wounds, and difficult life experiences. Our approach is evidence-based and progressive.

We want to understand and help, not “fix” you.

We know that everyone’s journey is unique. Finding inner peace, self-acceptance, and joy looks different for everyone. This is why we approach every session with authenticity, curiosity, and empathy to help you discover what you need to truly thrive.

We honor the importance of connection in therapy.

We strive for genuine connection. As therapists, we understand that humans are relational beings who aim to connect with one another through our shared humanity. By modeling secure attachment in-session, we build healthy professional relationships rooted in trust, boundaries, and acceptance.

We are always learning & love what we do.

We love what we do. We are always pursuing new training and incorporating new ideas into our work. We are genuinely happy to be working with you while also bringing a wealth of experience to the table.

Talk Therapy

We offer trauma-informed, in-person psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, at our Santa Fe office and online via telehealth.

Individual psychotherapy involves working directly with one of our highly trained providers who will work with you to understand what brought you to therapy to provide personalized tools, strategies, and support you can use to create and live a more fulfilling life.

Psychotherapy is designed to help you gain insight, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. It also helps people identify issues that cause emotional distress & learn skills to help gain insight and self-regulation. Therapy may also serve as a safe place to discuss feelings and emotions triggered by daily stressors, medical illnesses, relationship issues, grief and loss, or the impact of a specific trauma.

Couples Therapy

We offer couples therapy for adults who are navigating relationship challenges, disconnection, and/or challenging relationship/communication patterns. Unlike individual therapy, couples therapy involves working directly with one of our highly trained providers who will work with you and your partner(s) to understand your unique backgrounds, both as individuals and as a couple, what you hope to gain from therapy, and what underlying struggles brought you to therapy.

Our providers are trained to support a wide range of relationship structures including long-term relationships, LGBTQ+ relationships, polycules, open relationships, interracial relationships, interfaith/non-faith relationships, blended families and more.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

We offer Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence-based form of talk therapy model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. This therapy model views the mind as a system of interacting “parts,” each with its own perspectives, feelings, and motivations. As part of our IFS therapy, you work with one of our highly trained therapists to identify and understand the specific sub-personalities or families that make up your internal mental system. Once you identify these parts, your therapist will help you acknowledge your feelings about these suppressed emotions, learn how to release these feelings so you are able to address the actual problem, and ultimately find more positive ways to manage conflicts on your own.

To help you identify and understand these different parts of your psyche and how they interact, your therapist may suggest certain tools to help you do this, such as relaxation exercises, visualization, keeping a journal, and creating a chart that illustrates the relationship between Self and the different parts of you.

Art Therapy

We offer art therapy that uses art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork as a therapeutic and healing process. This form of therapy is especially helpful when someone is struggling to find the words to articulate their thoughts and emotions in words. During these times, your art therapist can help you express yourself through a variety of art media and help you integrate nonverbal cues and metaphors that are often expressed through the creative process.

This therapy is designed for people of all ages to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.

Comprehensive Community Support Services (CCSS)

We recognize that sometimes clients face challenges that aren’t exactly clinical. This is why we also offer comprehensive Community Support Services (CCSS) to individuals that need help acquiring certain life skills or accessing community resources. As part of this service, one of our highly trained Community Support Workers (CSW) will work with the individual(s) or families to help them access the services and resources they need to help promote recovery, rehabilitation, and resiliency.

The CSW also serves as an advocate by interacting face-to-face and on behalf of the client in community locations, while utilizing a variety of interventions to address any barriers that impede the client’s development toward independence. A CSW addresses goals in the following functional domains: Independent Living, Learning, Working, Socializing and Recreation.
